Chapter Eight

“Come on, Storm Front. You can do it, girl.” Matt rubbed the horse’s muzzle as Aiden did his thing at the other end.

The foal’s hooves emerged. Aiden looked up at Matt and smiled. Robin couldn’t take her gaze off the unfolding miracle. Storm Front’s pants got faster and faster. While Robin had ridden horses throughout her life, she’d never been around for a live birth of any kind. This incredible event was changing her insides one cell at a time.

As the young animal emerged, steam poured off the foal. Robin couldn’t help but clap at the wonderful delivery. The mare looked behind her and nudged the newborn. She licked the placenta, clearing the breathing passages.

Aiden helped the process a bit by peeling off the rest of the afterbirth.

Matt glanced at her and smiled. “Come on, girl, get up.”

He stood and moved out of the way. He smelled a bit like horse, and hay covered his knees as he came over to her side.

“Now what?”

“We’ll let mom do her work.”

Storm Front began to lick the newborn, and Aiden exited the stall. “I think my work is done.”

Once Aiden removed his gloves, Matt shook his hand. “Thanks.”

“You’ve got a beautiful colt there. If there’s any change, call me.”

“You go it.”

Matt radiated excitement. He glanced over at the colt again. “The best part is watching him stand.”

“I’ve never seen that.”

Matt wrapped an arm around her waist. “You warm enough?”

She was a bit chilled, but standing next to Matt helped. “Yes.” She nodded to the new animal whose eyes had opened. “Is this your first?”

“Yes. I now have three Arabians. Clay and I share about two hundred and fifty head of cattle, but if I get my own ranch, I want to only have horses. Cattle take too much time. I want to concentrate on breeding these beauties.”

The colt attempted to stand but fell back down. “Come on, boy.” She wanted to rush in and help the animal but knew he had to do this himself.

For the next twenty-five minutes they watched the struggle to gain independence. The wind picked up outside and occasionally battered the sides. “Is a storm expected?”

He looked at her then shot his gaze over her head. “Crap. I hadn’t even noticed. It’s snowing.”

She checked it out. From the slant of the snow, it was driving pretty hard. That sucked. “Maybe it’ll stop soon. In Miami, our storms only last about an hour.”

“Not in Montana.”

The colt stood, and her heart soared. He dropped to his knobby knees once more, but Storm Front nudged him. On the next try he got up on his own and even took a few steps. The outside noise registered.

“What is that?”

Matt looked blank for a moment. “Shit. It’s raining. We need to go.”

“Will the baby be okay?”

“Mom will make sure of it.”

In the few seconds it took to get outside, the wind had shifted, driving a combination of snow and moisture. Matt wrapped his arm around her as they hurried outside. Since the quasipath wasn’t wide, he went first to press down the snow while he held her hand behind him.
